Catfish

This was the first film I watched that was really related to what our own documentary was going to be about.

At first our film was going to focus on social media and how everyone seems to have a dual personality online. It's a pretty common concept among sci fi writers however this film manages, by chance, to completely blow the lid on what could be going on online, on Facebook, Twitter etc.

The film follows a group of three lads, one begins to have a relationship online with a girl he has never met, he calls her, sends presents, gets to know her family. This thing goes on for about 6 months I think until he suddenly begins to realize that something is amiss, cracks start to appear in the truth, this girl does not appear to be who she says she is. So the guy goes to visit her in person and he finds out that the whole thing is fabricated by one woman at her computer.

What your expecting is for there to be some kind of argument, falling out, he's been manipulated for months by this woman, however what happens is that we get to see this really very lonely woman share her thoughts, fears, dreams with this young man who she's known for a very long time. Its a strange film, its heartwarming yet shocking. You feel for both parties.

The entire film was a complete fluke, the makers of this film had no idea at the start that this incredible story would materialize. I think it goes to show that sometimes you just have to get a little lucky, you have to persevere even if your own idea is struggling to materialize.
