Indie Game The Movie
As a huge gamer watching this was a bit of a no brainier. The film follows the development of three games - FEZ, Super Meat Boy and Braid. All three of them are what's called 'Indie Games'. Independent productions made by small development teams usually out of their own money or crowd funding.
Its a market that's sky rocketed this generation and more and more gamers are jumping on the bandwagon. While all mainstream games are having to conform to market models indie games are where all the innovation and originality lie.
This documentary highlights the real passion, creativity and love that goes into these games. Its an art form no less than film, music and paintings. I think this could be a very educational film for those politicians, parents and nay sayers who spend their time arguing that video games are being detrimental to society.
The film is strangely made up of interviews after interviews with very little footage outside of that. However the film remains entertaining and engrossing throughout. I think because we get to see these developers at such a human level we begin to care about their work and appreciate their sacrifices and dedication. You'd be hard pressed to find a job that requires as many hours as it does being an indie games developer.
